- The XJ included the industry's first Adaptive Restraint Technology System (ARTS).
- Front passenger and driver air bags are dual stage, and the XJ includes seat-mounted side air bags, which are also monitored by ARTS.
- Side-curtain air bags also are included to help protect all passengers in side-on collisions.
- ABS is standard, controlling 4-wheel disc brakes and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC).
- The XJ adds the option of Front Park Control to the standard Reverse Park Control. Ultrasonic sensors in the bumpers are used to detect unseen obstacles at the front or rear of the car.
- Optional Radar-based Adaptive Cruise Control responds to changing traffic conditions in an effort to maintain desired speed, as well as the chosen following distance between you and the vehicle ahead
- The Forward Alert System can also be set to simply alert you if the traffic ahead is slowing down.
